Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s Plan to Crush the Elderly and the Poor

OK. So Mitt Romney has shaken his magic 8-ball and concluded that 42 year old Paul Ryan(R-WI) is going to be his VP choice. Conservatives had their incredible hulk underoos in a bunch over the notion of a more conservative pick like Pawlenty(R-MN) or Portman(R-OH). I understand. One boring white guy on a ticket is still salvageable but two? No way. You would have a better chance of getting Rush Limbaugh to do a rally in Harlem’s Rucker Park. So what does Romney do? He picks a young, handsome, physically fit running mate who will be his political eye candy. After all, Americans love beauty. We have devoted whole TV shows, networks, and movie studios to it. But alas, the ability to do P90X(a worthy accomplishment believe me I’ve tried) does not a Vice-President make.

Paul  Ryan is most known as the House of Representatives GOP Budget Chief. He is the Freddy Kruger of budget cuts, the Michael Myers of money slashers, the Leatherface of entitlement cuts. Please make no mistake, there is nothing subtle about Paul Ryan and his politics. Paul Ryan’s proposed budget cuts would do the following:

1) cut top tax rates, overhaul medicare, and slash “entitlement” programs

2) cut top income rate to 25% and a lower tax bracket of 10%

3) cut corporate income tax to 25% and exempt any profits made overseas by U.S. Corporations from taxation

4) repeal both the Alternative Minimum Tax and the tax increases from health care reform

*These four major tax cuts would cost roughly 4.6 trillion dollars in lost Federal Revenue over the next 10 years(not counting overseas corporate tax exemptions)*

5) cut Medicaid by 800 billion over the next 10 years and increase steadily after that

6) cuts SNAP(food stamps) by 134 billion over the next 10 years and cuts Pell Grants as well

*By cutting SNAP and Pell Grants, this disproportionately affects the poor and minorities in terms of access to quality health and quality education.Promising students from low-income areas will likely not be able to attend college. As a former teacher, I understand how vital programs like these are to the success of inner-city impoverished children*

7) cuts non-defense discretionary spending which includes things such as: Veteran’s Health, Scientific Research, National Parks, Clean Air and Clean Water Enforcement, Head Start, Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program(WIC), and Home-Delivered meals for seniors

According to Budget Analyst Robert Greenstein, Ryan’s plan would “likely produce the largest redistribution of income from the bottom to the top in modern U.S. history and likely increase poverty and inequality more than any other budget in recent times(and possibly the nation’s history)”. It is important to realize that Paul Ryan has 1) never run stateside 2) no foreign policy experience  3) no national security experience 4) actually driven the wienermobile. I’m not hating Oscar Mayer, as a matter of fact, I’ve paid some joyful visits to their hot dogs in the past. Just not sure how comfortable I am with the wienermobile driving, self-admitted ski bum, budget slashing , so-called economic “guru” a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the idea of restoring some of the previously cut defense spending is a good thing. Our soldiers and military personnel deserve to be taken care of properly. Paul Ryan is not the anti-christ. And no I don’t think he’s racist. After all for him the President’s election was ” a cool thing.” That may read a bit tongue and cheek but I am sincere about that. I just think that he is a radical right republican in the same vein as Rush Limbaugh minus the drug problems and impending coronary issues. He speaks well and knows all the right buzzwords to say. Some will undoubtedly drink the kool-aid and be rejuvenated by the glaring personality and physical differences between him and Romney. But make no mistake, politically and economically, they are one in the same. And remember folks, it is impossible to reduce any deficit without a combination of spending cuts and revenue increases. Paul Ryan proposes massive cuts in spending and taxes with no mention of the revenue increases necessary to truly erase or significantly reduce the deficit. Don’t drink the kool-aid!
